Present Post 1

My name is Chloe Backman and I am a sophomore early childhood education major and leadership development minor here at JCU. I am from Broadview Heights, Ohio, which is a quick 25 minute drive from campus. On campus I enjoy to keep myself busy. I am a member of the cheerleading squad and on the opposite spectrum I also play the oboe in the wind ensemble. I work at the JCU Bookstore and also keep score for IM Sports. Greek life is also important to me as I am a member of Chi Omega Sorority, and lastly, I am a member of the Leadership Scholars Program. In my scarce free time one can find me working out at the gym or socializing with my friends. If one could not tell from my activities listed above I plan on remaining to stay busy this semester while keeping up with my school work and social life.
Throughout my time in school I have read multiple articles and essays, some of which I found to be essential to my interests. One essay I found appealing came from a text that was read in Education 100, To Teach: The Journey, in Comics,  “teaching is an interactive practice that begins and ends with seeing the student. It is ongoing and never completely finished. The student grows and changes, the teacher learns, the situation shifts, and seeings becomes an evolving challenge. As layers of mystification and obfuscation are peeled away as the student becomes more fully present to the teacher, experiences and ways of thinking and knowing that were initially obscure become the ground on which an authentic and vital teaching practice can be constructed” (pg. 13). Throughout my college career I have spent a lot of time in settings with young children between my job as a summer camp counselor and field hours that I have completed. I found this significant because the more I worked with my kids in each setting, the more I found out about them and the more present they became to me. Teaching is a career that has always appealed to me, and being able to see a physical example that came from a textbook was a really neat experience and will help me pursue my future job.
When I am in an academic setting there are certain things that make me feel comfortable and certain things that don’t. I don’t like sitting in a lecture and taking notes off of a slide show. I like to be physically involved and hands-on. I am a fan of open-based discussions and projects. There are times that I like to work in groups so there is more brain power working together, but also times in which I like to work on projects independently. These styles of learning can help me feel comfortable taking intellectual and creative risks in a college classroom.
Although I am primarily excited about facing the field of education, I do have some concerns. A main concern of mine is the availability of jobs at the early childhood setting. It is my dream to teach 2nd grade at a public school in the suburbs of Cleveland. Attending JCU should help me get my foot in the door at neighboring school districts, but I am still worried that job opportunities will be scarce.
In regards to taking Education 253 I do have some questions: How does this class differ from education classes that I took last year? What can I expect from the service learning component?
Overall I am looking forward to this class and it’s ability to further expand my knowledge about the field of early childhood education.
